Worcestershire Voices Economy Priority

The Board have decided to focus on the Economy as both public and private sector support for the VCS are closely linked to Economic Planning and Development policy.

Why is this a priority:

Many VCS organisations face a massive change in how its work is funded. Current developments in relation to social enterprise and local economic planning provide new opportunities for our sector and we want to make as much of these opportunities as possible.

What we are currently doing:

Worcestershire Voices’ representatives are working closely with the Worcestershire Local Economic Partnership (WLEP) whose primary agenda is improving access to work and 'pre-work' programmes for those who are already disadvantaged. WLEP are currently working on two inter-related programmes:
1. EU Structural Investment Funds of about £60m spread over 5 years 2014-20 are aimed at correcting the economy for injustices and imbalances between groups here and across the EU regions.
2. The much larger UK Local Growth Fund will provide some £2Bn over the next two financial years in pursuit of government growth agenda in Worcestershire – largely based on Michael Heseltine’s “No Stone Unturned” approach.
The WLEP brings these together in its Strategic Economic Plan.
Our representatives meet regularly with members of WLEP and our focus is to ensure real opportunities for those who are excluded or at risk of exclusion from any form of economic participation, those at risk of exploitation as consumers only, and all who care about the costs of uninhibited growth to our environment and everyday life.

What we have done so far:

  • held discussion groups at our Forum event to capture the thoughts of the sector

How you can get involved:

  • Read the report on the Forum and in the links below
  • Identify key people (could you do it?) who should be working with us on the above agenda
  • Identify key groups across the county with whom we need to engage
  • Consider joining SEntral - the Social Enterprise Network for Worcestershire which is open to both profit makers and voluntary organisations who are motivated by a desire to increase social benefit - contact Sue Fry for more details
