Critical role of Foodbanks during and post Covid19
Foodbanks have played a critical role in supporting those in need, getting vital food and supplies to these people during the COVID19 pandemic.
During the initial lockdown, there was a huge increase in demand for services and support from VCS organisations and many people were requiring support that have never needed it before due to these unprecedented circumstances.
It has been great to see how foodbanks in Worcestershire have supported those in need across Worcestershire, as well as how the local community has come together to support this work through vital donations and volunteering.
Here are just a few examples of the great work local foodbanks have been doing, ensuring the most vulnerable individuals across the county have access to what they need.
● The team at
Salvation Army Worcester have provided over 100 food parcels to families needing help during the lockdown.
●
Good Soil Trust previously ran a weekly food station in the city of Worcester. During the pandemic they have doubled its activities and have been feeding 80+ people every Saturday night.
● The
Wyre Forest Food Bank has increased its services from providing 40 food parcels to now over 170 parcels. It has also had tremendous support from Morrisons supermarkets to support their efforts through donations.
These are all great examples of the fantastic work that has been taking place across the county, but we do know that many organisations did still face challenges and struggles.
For many foodbanks, the Covid-19 pandemic created a seesaw effect. On the one side they were experiencing a huge increase in the demand for services, but on the other there was a decrease in the number of donations, due to the lockdown creating a lack of access to their normal donation drop-offs.
Thanks to the support and generosity of the general public over recent weeks, donations have been picking up again and foodbanks have been able to balance this ‘seesaw’ and meet the increased demand.
However, more needs to be done to enable them to continue meeting this demand and continue supporting as many people as possible.
Although it may seem like the initial wave is over with more businesses now reopening and many of us beginning to return to some form of normality, there are still so many in need.
It is vital that people are still donating to foodbanks and support is still needed for those most vulnerable and in need as a result of Covid-19.
You would be shocked to know that there are often people struggling within just a stone's throw of where you live.
By taking the time to consider what you can do to help, whether that be making a small donation or volunteering your time and efforts, every little helps and your support will be vital in supporting foodbanks as we emerge from the pandemic.
